What Is The Secret Of Your Success?

Lyrics: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller
Music: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller

In the 2007 KPFA Marathon, David Gans played a studio outtake from 10 November 1976 where Jerry Garcia fools around with a fragment of this song:

What is the secret of your success?
The way you walk and talk and dress
You're so polished in everything you do
All the cats from town imitating you
You got me puzzled, now come on, confess
What is the secret of your success?

You're a devil with the women, but they all call you a saint
Some cats got it, and some cats ain't
The Coasters recorded this song in the late 1950s, and I imagine that's where Jerry got it from. I don't have the Coasters' version, but a version from the same era by the Keytones is rather different lyrically:
What is the secret of your success?
You wear those pretty clothes and crazy vests
Why you can get girls and [I can't]?
Some folks have got it and some just ain't

This guy ain't nothing but a [?]
Drives those long thin pretty cars
Each time I see [a man], I nearly faint
Some folks have got it and some just ain't

This boy's a killer, man, I must confess
I [took his attitude to a test]
Man, I'm telling you I'm tired of this mess
He even took the girl that I love best
